Excuse me if I sound kind of bitter about it, but Joy Division have influenced not only my fundamental attitude towards music, but my whole life in a very profound way. There were times when listening to them felt like going to the mass . Their music was different and the lyrics were pure poetry. I guess I was expecting New Order to honor that image and continue the life of Joy Division, in a way. They hadn't done that. So, without Joy Division and having thoroughly absorbed all of their work available to me, I have slowly started to comfort myself with Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Cure, Residents and similar. It felt quite soothing. And, of course, I was listening very carefully to what was going on...
Among other sad things that happened in 80s is that Joy Division, after the suicide of Mr. Ian Curtis, have transformed into the New Order and produced among many, in my opinion, one of most irritant songs ever recorded. Regardless of what I think about it, the Blue Monday (if by any chance you don't know it, the link will take you to the mercifully edited version) hit the charts and was simply adored by band’s fans. I guess it still is ...
I guess that from what I wrote up to now, you could have got the impression that I am not quite happy with the music of the 80s. But, that is not true. Some of it now feels almost like an evergreen. And some of it was so good that it just remained in and regardless of the new styles and grooves, it has become timeless... There are many bands from the 80s I really liked and whose records I still do have, but they will not be mentioned here because they are not a direct part of the line of influences I am trying to describe here.
